Steve Caballero Interview January 31, 1998
 |
Our next (Warped Tour 1998) victim could only be described as 'mr mature'. At the time i had reservations about asking him some of these questions as when i started skating a long time ago he was one of the mighty 'bones brigade', a true virtuous hero.

50-50 : are you having fun?
Steve Caballero : well yeah, i'm just over this tour already
50-50 : so why were you the only member of the bones brigade not to start his own company?
SC : i think the reason for that is that i chose the path of being a professional skater, i think when you start a company you have to be a businessman. I am a businessman in my own self, like a sole employee, but i don't have anyone underneath me to boss around. just myself.
50-50 : So how come you never invented a trick called the 'taxi cab'?
SC : i don't know, i think it's because it's too cliched, that's why i never used a taxi cab in an ad, it's too basic.
50-50 : why did hawaiian island creations one of your previous sponsors drop you like a bad habit when skating became less popular?
SC : because of the same reason they got into it.
50-50 : Who spraypainted the word 'chin' on the wall at wallows? because we're thinking of having him arrested, we remember when you sprayed 'the faction' on the wall in Future Primitive.
SC : I think it might of been Craig Stesyck, it was probably him, he helped to put that whole film together, and he's the one that's always writing trash.
50-50 : So was there something phallic about skating the 'deanza nipple banks'?
SC : I never even knew they were called that, they were really called the fish banks. we still skate the fish banks though the original banks aren't there anymore they've got blocks and curbs now.
50-50 : So how come you're riding with rails again?
SC : Ever since i started riding vert again, i didn't ride vert for a while, i was skating street again because there were no ramps around, when i got back into vert i just didn't feel comfortable without them, plus sometimes i like to do super long railslides and they help for that, plus it keeps the graphics nice, it's good for pictures, why have graphics if it's just going to come off in a couple of runs?

50-50 : has your paycheck got smaller as your boards have got cheaper?
SC : No, actually a lot of my paychecks come from vans, designing shoes. Basically i get a fair amount of money from powell but i just get paid the same. See, we make our own boards so we don't have to pay a manufacturer for boards like a lot of fake companies.
50-50 : when did the batman shirt go out of style?
SC : Probably when that movie came out, after then everyone started wearing that shit.
50-50 : Did it all start with Batman and Spiderman underoo's?
SC : I think it probably did.
