Hawaii Skatepark Association
HSA was established in 1995 as a grass roots, Hawaii non-profit organization to unite the skateboarders of Hawaii and act as a go-between for the City and County of Honolulu, The State of Hawaii, The U.S. Federal Government and the Skateboarders of Hawaii.

Two years of planning had landed HSA with the YMCA of Honolulu as well as the three levels of government to create the YMCA Kapahulu Skatepark. As you can imagine, with this many "interested" parties involved the voice of the skateboarders needed to be raised to a level that they could, and would, all listen. This is why the Hawaii Skatepark Association was started. HSA represents the skateboarders of Hawaii and serves as an information hub for all. Scroll down to find a more in-depth view of the people and history behind HSA as well as tips and advice that you can use to help get organized. Check out The Kapahulu Experiment for a 15 minute video on getting Kapahulu opened.

A Brief "His Story of HSA"
This prose was created as a vehicle to understand the people that went behind the organization. It's also a short read on some history of skateboarding in Hawaii from 1987-2001, albeit told from one skateboarder. »»

Ten Steps Forward
We have compiled a list of ten things that you really should think about and do if you are serious about getting a skatepark in your community. These pointers will not only help you get a skatepark, but will teach you some basic life lessons and code of conduct that we live by everyday. »»

Liability Contract for YMCA Kapahulu Skatepark
One of the great things that helped us gain clout with the City was our comprehensive Liability Contract (not Waiver). We quickly understood from legal counsel that liability waivers do not always hold up in court, if there ever should be a suit. So we decided, after research, that it would better serve us to create a "contract" instead of a "waiver". This contract was comprised from several skate and non-skate related forms. Download it, read it, use it as a template, make it better and pass it on. »»

The Plan
HSA had created it's own 30 page business plan for the skatepark. This plan was complete with statistics, pictures, mini-blueprints and a complete overview of how the park was going to be operated—not to mention how much money it was proposed to bring in. It was this glossy plan that made them look at us more seriously. It made it harder for them to turn us away. One compliment from the City was that this plan was more articulate and understandable than most City generated plans. It was important for us to not only get our ideas across in this document, but to express them in such a way that anyone could read and use it. We have stripped the plan of all it's glory and created a text-only version for you to read, keep in mind that the plan was written in 1996 and contains outdated information. coming soon »»
