The End for Hawaii's Skateparks!?? April 20, 2002
|
For those who haven't heard, Budget Chair Ann Kobayashi is proposing drastic cuts to the City budget that will severely impact the ability to build and maintain City parks. A proposal which will put a stop on all the planned skateboard parks due to concerns about liability and costs.
So we keep asking... where's the money going? I can't even count how many times that we offered - meeting after meeting - valid solutions and contacts to hire professional design/build skatepark companies who would not only offer lower costs, but excellence in design, construction, and most of all - safety!!!
This truly is a sad day for Hawaii skateboarder's young and old. Us older one's have seen this over and over for the last 25+ years, so in a way it's not surprising. But for all the kids who were promised "more skateparks will be built" by the Mayor/City and County, is not only a major contradiction, but it will definitely leave a dramatic impact on how they view the City and County system from now on.
If you're concerned, spread the word and have as many people as possible call, write, fax, or email City Council members Darrlyn Bunda, Steve Holmes, Duke Bainum, Romy Cachola, Gary Okino, John DeSoto. Email them all at once by Clicking Here and let them know how you feel about Budget Chair Ann Kobayashi's proposed budget cuts. And while you're at it, let them know that by using competent, experienced professional skatepark builders, would not only save the City money, but it would also reduce the risks and liability of poorly designed and built skateboard parks.
