World Industries Demo & the Bloody Toss-Off January 12, 1999
 |
Fuck the Date. Fuck the Time. It's all about the place. Kapahulu Skatepark
It's not everyday that a really good demo comes to town. The Girl team seemed to disappoint the Hawaii crowd pretty bad. The Kastel Team didn't really do a demo, but they really demoed the fuck out of this place and now the World Industries Team takes a crack.

With VK at the helm they couldn't show up in anything less than a super stretch limo in the form of a SUV. They piled out of that thing like it was a camper van. Rodney Mullen went straight into a freestyle warm up and he didn't stop skating for four hours (despite a slight rain).
The masses attended. I don't think I ever recalled Kapahulu seeing this many spectators. Maybe it was because it was rumored that just about the entire World team was going to be here. Only a handful showed up, but that's all it took.

Rodney is one strange cat - fs k-grind
*you can see him bail this trick in the
Tony Hawk Proskater 2 video game... woohoo

Daewon Song was one of the coolest skateboarders I met on the tour. He was outgoing and stoked to skate with the kids. One memorable thing he did was, out of a monetary bet, he pulled a kickflip over the bank to bank transfer then a blunt to kickflip fakie on the 7ft quarter.

 |
I'm not sure how to figure out the math here, but Daewon made $200 on this line. $100 for this kickflip and another $100 for the blunt to kickfilp which followed. I wonder if the kung-fu style earns any extra $. |
Brian Anderson and Caine Gayle were both tearing up the ledge and the boxes with kickflip to nosegrinds to somethingout or bs lipslides or g-grinds. Enrico Lorenzo also finally stuck this nollie bs 360 flip thing on the newly fucked up bank ramp.

Rodney Mullen did his newest "see if you can do this one for $1000" trick that probably will appear in an A-Team ad soon. He was cool too, he skated hard and did some mind blowing flippy shit that I would not be able to understand even in freeze frame bourqui photography (ed. so that's why bourqui shot some sequences - below).

The product toss was insane. These kids go nuts for products - that's cool. What wasn't so fucking cool was how Caine Gayle threw the decks and wheels and shit. These kids are gonna go nuts over the stuff once they hit the ground anyway, but why does a highly paid professional need to whip decks, flying saucer style, at these 12-16 year old kids. Or whip wheels like he was trying to break a kid. These 'Product Warfare' tactics worked as kids with shiners and bumps on the head came to the front desk for first aid attention. Right on GAYle. He's not the first one. If this article ever gets to any of these pros out there or anyone for that matter who is ever in the other side of the product toss scenario just remember that these kids are not as fortunate as you are (or else they wouldn't be begging, would they) and they would probably gain more respect for you if the product you threw in their direction didn't break skin, cause bruising or knock them out all together. Think about it hot shot.

The World Demo, it was good to see real skateboarding again and for such a long period of time. It seemed like they didn't want to stop skating. I'd like to see more of that and less of the bloody tosses.
