For almost a year a ramp contest had been "in the works", and due to persistence dealing with the "military" (for those who don't know Hickam Hanger is on Hickam AFB) red tape, PASS finally won the battle! 2 day event - Mini-Ramp Contest Saturday, September 27 and Vert-Ramp Contest Sunday, September 28, 1997.

Article by: Mike Kays

Sept 27 (Mini-Ramp) 6' X 24'spined
Well things actually began almost on time ..12pm was the start for the contest and first up on the ramp was the 1A division (beginners) , a total of about 10 skaters entered this division, the jam and semi-final cut this down to the top 6 contestants. Ryan Williamson took top honors with smooth fakie hang-ups and "baby" ollies, Tim Sharp was second and kept the ball rolling with nice grinds and tail stalls, Jason Cantrell followed up in third with fakie ollies and rock'n rolls, Anton Glamb , Aaron Eveland , and Robbie Menendez carried the groms close behind and landed 4th, 5th, 6th to cap off the 1A division. 2A division (intermediate) once again saw about 10 contestants entered and things really started to heat up as Glenn Odum lead the way with an aggressive skating style, throwing disasters, grinds, and other amazing defeats of science to dazzle the judges eyes! Bino Gregory followed close behind in second place with solid 50-50's, and airs (ollie and grab), Paul Bajcar really had a smooth style and was very consistent with various lip tricks and spine transfers, Chris Menendez followed in fourth, Ryan Lau fifth, and Clint Chinin sixth. Unfortunately the 3A division (advanced) only saw 6 initial entries and 2 had to leave early due to prior commitments work and a wedding (not his own), but none the less the performance was not hindered by this chain of events! Rob Waldron owned the ramp this night and he had plenty to show for all .disasters, ching-chings (frontside as well as backside), air to tail, lip slides, smiths, and blunts ( regular and nose) only to name a few. On his heels was Chris Kays , grom extraordinar, chris tried to pull deep within but fell a little short to catch Rob, but took a respectful second by pulling big frontside airs (Kale you'd be proud), ollies up and down the extension, 50-50's, Five-0's, and meloncholies over the spine. Right behind Chuck Mitsui fended off hard charge'n Mark Kouno (4th) for third spot by technical moves and serious style and consistency points. Fifth and Sixth honorary went to Brian Takishitta and Jeff Giacobetta .

Ahhhh yes Sponsored Am .. Now this was definitely a heated session! Approx. 10 of the best skaters in Hawaii, going head to head ..man I'd hate to be the judge's on this one! Anyway the cuts were made and only six remained ..Ian Okui (Headside )put it all together and pulled it out at the end for first place; total ramp dominance prevailed for Ian, throw in a benihana, airs to tail, ollies, smiths, ching-chings, transfers, and the list goes on which got him past "the man" to beat ..Sam Clemens (by the hair of Ian's chiny, chin, chin). Sam Clemens (808 Skate, Natural Koncept ) once again man handled the ramp, .. beat it, bruised it, smacked it, and whip'd it! His transfers over the spine (air and smith) were graceful to watch, as well as lien to tails, rock'n rolls, smiths, and re-verts. Last minute entry Alika Frietas (Antigravity ) turned out a solid run for third by consistent smiths, airs, blunts, 50-50's and half cab grabs over the spine. Ryan Arakaki (Natural Koncept, Estilio ), Chad Hiyakumoto (808 Skate) , and Richard Gregory (Natural Koncept ) respectfully took forth, fifth, and sixth place. Trick of the day went to .Chuck Mitsui (Smith to b-side 180 out) and Worst Slam prize ..Jeff Giacobetta (B-side air to hang-up) Topping of the day's event was the showing of the new Volcom video Freedom Wig . Kick back ..relax and enjoy.

Sept 28 (Vert-Ramp) 10' X 32'
Day two ..exhausted, and sore we endured in pain and held up to the promise .VERT CONTEST!!!!!! When was the last time for a Vert contest in Hawaii..???? Can you remember? Let me know if you know the answer (demo's don't count) ..

Same format as day one .first off was the 1A (beginners) highlights was Chacy Eveland coming from behind to Surpass Tim Sharp for first kaleplace. Groms Aaron Eveland took third, Jason Cantrell fifth, and Trevis Nishioka sixth. Hats off to these groms for attacking the 10' Vert-ramp, Trevis finally made that roll-in! 2A (intermediate) division was lead by Chris Kays , pulling out ollies over the channel, five-0 grinds, 50-50's, .consistency kept him ahead of Jose Caban whose aggressive style kept him in second. Close behind was Eric Davis , solid rock'n rolls and airs held off the young Chris Menendez in forth and Jeff Locke fifth. Dedication award "pat on the back" went to Jeff Locke for participating even though a leg injury hampered his skating. 3A (advanced) kept everyone in suspense as once again Rob Waldron (I hope some sponsor won't let this one go?) did a number on his opponents as he disaster'd, grind'd, and air'd his way to first Sick Indy Airs as well as fluid style kept hard charge'n Brian Takishita just behind Rob in second place. Brian's inverts, insane nose grabbing frontside grinds, and frontside "tweeked" airs held off John Luengen for third place. John's handplant and backside air proved to be just too much and kept Jeff Giacobetta in forth place.

Sponsored Am

3rd. Wade Abreu (Natural Koncept)
4th. Alf Kondo (Town & Country)

Finally the finals of the Sponsored Am , and it was I believe one of the closest ones I've ever witnessed! Robby Gaskell (Acme) took the honors by 2 hundredths of a point! Incredible ally oops, blunts (fakie, backside, and to frontside), airs, ollies, disasters kept the crowd at the edge of their seats.

Kale Sandridge (Volcom, Nat. Koncepts, Blk Flys) held up to his reputation and blasted head high tweek'd frontside airs, incredible backside smiths even to re-vert, lien to tails and much more. Wade Abreu (Nat. Koncept) style was so smooth and consistent on the Vert, he negotiated the ramp with ease accomplishing frontside and backside airs, ally oops, disasters, lien to "smack your mama" tail, and countless lip tricks. Alf Kondo (T&C), fresh off Hawaiian Airlines, jet lagged but skated consistently throughout the event pulling backside airs, disasters, and an intense fakie air-board varial .say Alf "what's that called" anyway?

Needless to say Alf took the Trick of the Day for the board varial thingy Highest Air went to .(drum roll please) ..Kale Sandridge , and Best Grind award went to Brian Takishita.
